The Midnight Hour

The last week or so I have had a wicked bout of insomnia. I find myself not falling asleep until around 4am. I'm not sure what little goblin is stealing my sleep...I've tried to smoke him out, but he is determined to stay hidden.

Not being able to sleep does have some positives. For instance, the other night I got started on my mega-questionnaire for adoption. I wasn't sleepy so I kept going...and I finished my part! FINISHED. Now I'm just waiting on some documents that are being mailed to us and for Nathan to finish his portion. I also found out that I have some random beeping alarm that goes off at 3:16am. I think it is a stopwatch, but I haven't been able to catch it before it stops beeping...maybe tonight. :)

I have tried several things to placate my little sleep goblin. No caffeine during the day, Ambien, muscle relaxers, Tylenol PM, ambient noise, counting backwards...all to no avail. Yesterday after not falling asleep until 3am I still got up at 8, cleaned the apartment, cooked a big meal, ran errands and still was not tired when bedtime came around. I didn't fall asleep until almost 4 this morning. Any suggestions? I mean, I've always been a night owl, but this is getting ridiculous!

You have a lot of stress in your life right now that it doesn't surprise me you're not sleeping. The adoption paperwork alone will do that, but throw in a difficult job search, too? You've got a lot on your mind and I don't think there's a lot you can do for that in the short term. Sorry.

I've heard that Melatonin is really good. Never tried it ... I've just heard it is great. Did you get approved for unemployment? I would think that would take off some of the financial stress. Sorry you're going through this.

I was not approved. The State of Illinois can't approve me because on my 'record' it says that I had a benefit year in Utah starting in March of '09...even though I never collected a penny from them. (They said quitting your job to follow a military spouse is not just cause so they denied my claim). So I got screwed once again by the great state of Utah. My only hope would be for Utah to re-open my claim and pay benefits...but it would take the legislature changing the laws there for that to happen so it looks like that won't be the case. :(

this sounds nuts, but read somewhere that if you trace a figure eight with your eyeballs with your eyes closed, it helps. It works for me every time. Something about your brain moving in circular patterns

A hot bath? More laying around because that will make you more tired? More drugs - seriously find a good doctor and see what is up. DRUGS ARE WORTH IT!! I will send you funds if you need!!

That is crazy about the unemployment. How can they count a benefit year when no benefits were received?

well, i'll admit i'm a sleeper at heart. but when i can't fall asleep i tell each muscle in my body to relax one by one. i lay very still and start with my toes, move up my leg, then start relaxing my core, my fingertips, my hands, my arms, my shoulders, my neck, head, you get the idea. just do it slowly and breath. if that doesn't help. give yourself a lavendar bubble bath before bed and dim the lights in the house around 7pm. (then start popping the pills!!) good luck holly.

I use the melatonin , but more important is having a routine, things you do to wind down. You need to do that with a baby too, so you can practice on yourself. Good luck

I have another comment!! Sleep WHENEVER you can- I used to be able to take like 3 hour naps in teh afternoon - at least it is something to help your brain/body get the rest.
